Tot School {The Best Version}

Saturday, August 30, 2014

One afternoon while browsing on Pinterest, I came across the phrase "tot school". This peaked my interest because WB is entering the toddler phase of life. So I started reading blogs about tot school and searching "tot school" on Pinterest. Boy, did I find what I was looking for and then some.

I decided to create my own weekly schedule of activities as well as a calendar of themes. When I created our weekly schedule of activities, I kept in mind the attention span of WB which isn't very long. I also wanted something that fit our lifestyle. I work part-time in the mornings so I wanted something that I could do in the afternoons with him in between his afternoon nap and starting our evening routine. I also didn't want to overwhelm him since he does go to daycare 3 days a week in the morning.

So I came up with this:

Make Something Monday (crafts)
Time to Read Tuesday (books)
What's Cooking Wednesday (snacks)
Thoughtful Thursday (learning tray)
Fun Friday (not sure what we're going to do on this day yet)

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we may do more like a printables, learning tray or a craft that goes with that weeks theme since he doesn't go to daycare on those days.

I found a blank editable calendar online here. I used the template in portrait form with US holidays and notes so that way I can hole punch it and put it in my binder as well as coordinate themes with holidays. I even use this template for my calendar at work. Once I printed my calendar out, I wrote in pencil a theme for each week. I wrote the theme in pencil just in case we needed to switch it with a different week, etc.

As far as activities for each theme, I haven't quite gotten that far yet. However, my plan attack is as follows: search Pinterest for activities, books, foods, etc to go with each theme. Type up all of the ideas on a word document along with recipe or items needed for the activity. Then take my calendar and write an activity for each day that corresponds with our theme and weekly schedule. If we have more time and he enjoys doing certain activities, I'll pull up my master list and pick some more things to do.

On the Sunday before each week, I'm going to take my shoe boxes with lids and put each days activity or materials for that day in the corresponding box. That way I'm all set for the week. All I have to do is grab that days box and go.

I will try to document and blog our weeks as we go along. Things that went great and things that didn't go so great. I'll definitely be posting pictures over on Instagram so be sure to check us out there at k_best11.

If you have any questions, please feel free to comment or email me.

Have a great rest of your weekend :)
